End of the Road: MotorTrend Shuts Down, Marking a Shift in Automotive Media

Another automotive-focused TV show, Roadkill, has come to an end. Mike Finnegan shared the surprising news on Reddit, revealing that the show has been canceled after 13 seasons. Additionally, he confirmed that MotorTrend’s entire production company is shutting down.

Roadkill, like several other car shows, originally debuted on YouTube, offering free access to viewers. Its success caught the attention of MotorTrend, which decided to shift the series to its own streaming platform. Later, following Discovery’s acquisition of MotorTrend, the show transitioned to Discovery’s streaming service. Now, as the streaming market faces significant challenges, some speculate that these industry shifts may have contributed to the closure of MotorTrend’s production company.

I think I speak for many when I say that Velocity/MotorTrend was basically the only channel I enjoyed on cable television. There were so many useful shows for car and truck enthusiasts watch.

Shows like.

  • Iron Resurrection
  • Texas Metal
  • Bitch’n Rides
  • Shorty’s Dream Shop
  • RoadKill
  • Graveyard Carz
  • Garage Squad

and many more. All of which will probably be going to YouTube.

This announcement follows the earlier news that Top Gear and The Grand Tour are also ending, leaving car enthusiasts who enjoy binge-watching automotive TV shows stunned by the rapid changes in the industry.

Still, plenty of internet creators run successful and highly entertaining automotive channels on YouTube and other platforms. It wouldn’t be surprising to see some of them land intriguing deals with streaming services or major media companies as the media landscape evolves.

What does the future hold? It’s hard to say, but one thing is certain: the demand for engaging automotive content hasn’t disappeared. Where there’s an audience, there will always be someone ready to entertain them.

Martin Brothers Customs (Iron Resurrection) posted on their Facebook Page that they would be streaming on Discovery+ but will ultimately be ramping up their YouTube channel.
(It is a real shame how we have to be careful on Facebook)

Joe Zolper formerly of Garage Squad had this to say on his Facebook Page. He spills the tea!

A lot of things are changing, so look to YouTube to follow these guys.
