NEW Fuel Pump Spacer

Just a heads up. I am getting some new thicker fuel pump spacers made that will should allow us to use the Carter or Delphi pumps with no worries since the OEM pump is harder and harder if not impossible to obtain. Many places that we would normally order an OEM pump are not saying DISCONTINUED. These will be made of LE Phenolic Linen (Micarta) and is significantly more heat resistant than ABS. This is because phenolic is a thermoset plastic, which is cured through heating and forms permanent chemical bonds that resist melting. ABS, a thermoplastic, softens and deforms at much lower temperatures. So no... your 3D printer will not be able to print something that will withstand the heat. Also you cannot simply use aluminum or any metal as that will transfer heat from the cylinder head to the pump and boil your gas in the pump, causing issues. Phenolite (bakelite) is the way. This is a spacer but more so an insulator. That is actually what it is, we just call it a spacer and it is needed as a spacer as well. Not sure of a price yet, but they won't be super cheap. The cost to make, and shipping...ugh. Stay tuned.

Or would it just be easier to splice in an electric pump and make a block out plate for the head?

Did your existing fuel pump break its arm/lever or just fail or leak?
I've run a mechanical fuel pump from Autozone with one spacer for several years; I've had my '88 since 1994 and have never experienced a broken fuel pump lever.

I had the truck for 17 years (drive daily) and never had to replace it. I just got the head back from the machine shop
checking for cracks, I had a water leak. We determined it's the head gasket.
Got the engine back together and could not get gas to the carb.

How did you do your spacer with the Delphi pump?

If there is nothing wrong with an OEM pump, clean it up and keep using it.
As for gaskets for now, I would run the insulator and two paper gaskets and call it a day on whichever pump you choose to use.

How did you do your spacer with the Delphi pump?
One spacer (5mm thick) and a gasket on each side. The mechanical fuel pumps used to come with a new spacer and gaskets, I have about three extra spacers, all measure 4.5mm to 5.0mm.

The factory mechanical fuel pumps (no longer available through Mazda) looked just like this one below, from Goss of Australia.

The mechanical fuel pumps available in USA all seem to look like this Delphi one below; I have no idea if there is more than one actual manufacturer. I just know this Delphi one is what is in my own '88 B2200. Since buying mine in 1994, all my mechanical fuel failures were due to external leakage out the weep hole.

I would like to keep the oem pump! but it seems not to want to pump now! So since you can't get an oem, Carter or Delphi looks like it. The Goss pump would probably costing $300.00 plus.

I did watch your video and the Carter and Delphi are the same length arm. (Longer than stock oem.) So I was wondering the people who are run ether pump, how they are shimming it properly to reduce the pressure on the pump arm.

Last thing I read you were working on making some pump spacers for the Carter or Delphi pumps? I did look on your website but did not see any yet.

I wonder if filling the pump arm with JB Weld would stiffen it enough to where it wouldn't break.......or do you think it needs to have some "flex" to it.......but not so much that it fatigues the metal arm, like it is likely doing when it breaks.

Nope, nothing special. Just the 5.0mm spacer and the two paper gaskets. I've never monkeyed with anything else.

I wonder if anyone has tried the Goss fuel pump from Australia - not cheap, but looks like factory fuel pump.

Do you know if Goss doesn't produce these any more, or if it's just out of stock temporarily? Companies that make stuff like this usually tool up and produce several thousand units at a time, they don't make like 5 a day....

I don't know. I was unaware of their brand mechanical fuel pump until you pointed it out a month ago.

This Australian seller seems to sell the Goss mechanical fuel pump. I wouldn't buy it until this POTUS along with his ill-conceived, mercurial tariffs is/are over with. The import fee(s) will probably cost just as much as the item (plus shipping cost) itself.

So the company I wanted to use for cutting these out of the proper material

During our preproduction design checks, we noticed an issue that forced us to place your order on hold.
There are some details in your order that are too small for us to cut. We need all geometry to meet the required minimums for the material you selected. We have provided these minimums below.
.250" Phenolic Linen
Minimum Bridge: .250"
Minimum Hole to Edge: .075"
Minimum Hole Diameter: .125"

So basically the holes and inside cuts and outside cuts, cant be done using their machine.
So far now I just parked the idea.

This is not "just a spacer" its an INSULATOR, and that is because you do not want the heat from the head to transfer to the pump and boil fuel out of the pump.

Aluminum will not work in this situation.
ABS wont either.
