Axel-Breaker-Earl Cool stuff Cusser!! So.......why did you paint the convertible white? The Clementine Orange looks pretty good I think.....
The original owner was from Utah, and the VW did not have a garage space, so was exposed to the sun. When I bought the 1971 back in 1976, it had recently had its top replaced with a cheap one (also black). My mom had just had her own vehicle repossessed and I was stuck every afternoon after my work to go cross-town and pick her up, take her home, then get to my place. So I started looking around for an inexpensive vehicle to buy so I could lend to her, found this VW for $1300 and figured that it wouldn't go down in value too much. I told her to immediately pull over and call me if the oil pressure light or charging light came on while driving (and of course she did ignore that). Then in 1978 I decided to surprise her by having its sun-damaged paint job re-painted in white by Maaco ($140) as she once owned a 1957 white VW convertible, and I was still driving my white 1970 VW sedan. In late 1979 she got her own vehicle and returned the VW to me, and in 1980 I lent the convertible to a girlfriend for a month or two and she returned it freshly-washed with a coat of Armor-All on its top, and the top cracked a month later; so I had the tan top installed in 1980, and kept a blanket or cover over the top when it was parked in the Arizona sunlight to protect it from UV/sun until 1988 when I moved to a home with garage space for it. Back in those days with film cameras, we didn't take all that many photos, so I may have none of it when it was clementine orange. This still sports that 1978 Maaco paint job, I if I get this repainted someday, I'm undecided if I would stay with white or go back to orange. Note that this is not a show car !!!
And I did not marry that girlfriend...
