Head Gasket Questions

Hello, I’m looking to get a Head Gasket Set but I’m unsure if the B2000 will fit my B1600 1987.

Would anyone know if I have an F6 Engine or a FE F8 - mine looks like an FE F8 but I’m unsure they made them with a B1600 option. Any help would be appreciated

Have you looked it up on Rockauto? You can and you look at the headgaskets and see if they are different and see what years it will work with others.

MazdaMitch Unfortunately, we don’t have one in New Zealand. I’ve looked around here and all of the for the FE F8 but none say the F6 - which I think is because of the different bore sizes.

Think I’m going to just buy a set and see, if it doesn’t fit I’ll buy a new engine

OK with Rock auto, look for the B1600 in 1972, which was the first year that engine came to the US. There you will find the head gasket. By the picture, you'll be able to know if it the same as the one you have.

Car manufacturers are lazy, so it is likely that the one there will fit your 1987 ..

I would definitely post a picture of your engine for us to see, since you are in a different country than most of us here in the USA.

Funnily enough I found that the same gasket works for these engines built in the same year. Basically mine is the same as the FE F8 but is a F6, think it’s a small bore and less compression.

I believe mine was made specifically in Australia and New Zealand.

So, if the used head gasket that is on your engine in the picture above is the factory Mazda head gasket, then your engine is an FE style engine. Your head gasket has a oil restriction built into it (the copper/brass looking washer on the left, with a small hole in it.) just like the FE 2.0 engine (1986 & 1987 B2000 trucks) that we have in the US. The F2 2.2 engine (1987 through 1993 B2200 trucks) that we have here, has a oil restriction in the engine BLOCK, not the head gasket.

It appears that the old head gasket that is on your engine in the picture above, is the same head gasket that is used for the B2000 (2.0 FE) truck. The cylinder openings in the head gasket are considerably larger than the cylinder bores themselves! Maybe the head gasket has been changed on your engine before, and they just used a 2.0 FE head gasket.

Here is a picture of a 1986 B2000 2.0 FE engine with a new FelPro head gasket going on it that I did some years ago.....

See the small oil restriction hole, and how the gasket cylinder openings more closely match the larger cylinder sizes......compared to your engine cylinder sizes......

If you can post a picture of the top of your engine block, once you get the old head gasket material cleaned off of it, we can verify that you do not have a oil restriction in the engine block also.......you don't want BOTH oil restrictions!

Here is a 2.2 F2 engine block out of a 1989 B2200 truck......it has a oil restriction plug in the engine BLOCK, and not in the head gasket.
