So I was doing a little bit of studies this morning....you know bible studies....

And I came across a section that at one time I could have sworn it was in the owner's manual but instead it was in the Chilton's manual where I had read it before.
This came up in the Facebook group a long long time ago and it was about rear brakes and adjusting them.
The rear brakes have an auto adjustment mechanism. The way they are supposed to work is every time you back up they self-adjust and keep tension on the pads or adjust them to where there's tension. Just a slight drag on the wheels.
Overtime they get crusty from brake dust and they stop working but that's another story and topic for another day.
What I'm pointing out here is how do you know if you need to manually adjust them or replace your rear pads?
Pull the emergency brake out slowly and count the clicks and if it's not within this range you may want to check your rear brakes for wear and they may need adjustment or replaced.
I wouldn't go so far as to adjust the parking brake cable by any means because generally from the factory it's set like it should be.
What I would do was check the rear brakes because oftentimes the self adjusters do not work as intended.

If you're reading this and you do not know how to adjust your rear brakes it is in the brake section of the workshop manual which is also known as the service manual by Mazda right here on this website in the files section.
