spring found in oil pan

forgot to mention it was in a 1989 mazda b2200

I was scratching my head and then it dawned on me that I have seen that before inside of the PCV filter along with a small ball bearing that rides on it.

Yes.....more than likely that is what it is Mitch. On the 2.0 engine that I just pulled to put in my friends auto trans. truck, that PCV valve came apart when I lifted the engine and my chain was pushing on the PCV rubber hose.......it caused it to break open like some of them will do.
