You'd have to be skilled enough to keep the sanded surface flat AND parallel to the other side, maybe sand on a piece of sandpaper on a sheet of glass, like "we" do with Weber adapters.

MazdaMitch Both to me seems like a drastic move because once you add the paper gaskets and you put your bolts in you're only getting three or four threads into the cylinder head.

I'm pretty sure that I used longer bolts when I added the extra spacer.......I remember test fitting the original bolts and noticing that they were not going to be long enough then. I have a slew of Mazda fasteners from the last 20+ years to pull from. 🙂

Good that you have extra Mazda fasteners - because metric 8.0mm x 1.25mm bolts and nuts from Ace, Home Depot, etc., are typically not JIS, so utilize a 13mm wrench, not 12mm !

I'm going to ask a really dummmmm question: has anyone considered welding a reinforcing piece of steel to the inside of the fuel pump lever arm???

Something to consider, the pump arms on non OEM are still TOO LONG. Even if welded, the longer arms may/could cause more wear on the cam. Not sure I like that.

Keep in mind that the metal arm operates a pump diaphragm and welding on it could generate too much heat for the diaphragm to handle, without it leaking.

OK, was just an idea I had....I'll continue to use my Delphi fuel pump....and hope I never have to hit up Axel Breaker up for one of his spare factory pumps !

I just brought home 2 spare 2.2 engines and multiple other parts (aluminum radiator, new 1-piece driveshaft, auto trans cooling fan & shroud).......from a spare truck that I bought from another North Florida buddy a few months ago. I had to park it at another local friends house to keep the wife from yelling at me! 😀

I'm thinking about building a 12' x 12' Mazda parts Shed.......behind my 6-car detached Garage......I need more room!

Although, I did sell a 1990 B2200 Cab Plus truck that I had, and delivered it to a friend's son down in Bartow, FL this past weekend.......so I do have a little more room around here! Wife says I need to do this about 5 more times now! LOL.

Here is the truck........I had been working on it for about 3 months in my spare time, to get it road worthy......

I drove this truck down there (Bartow, FL) from Gainesville, FL taking the regular roads instead of the interstates & toll roads.......it was about 3 hours one way........the truck ran perfectly! The day & night before I drove it down there, I installed the factory A/C back into the truck.......with a used compressor that I didn't even know I had until a couple of days prior to leaving! I was searching for some other part, and opened one of my many Mazda parts plastic totes, and saw it in there. I have been trying to buy a new compressor (that fit the 1990 factory suction & pressure lines) and have had no luck.........so I was figuring that I was going to have to just drive it down there without A/C!!

I finished the A/C install and charging at around 9:30 PM the night before taking it down South........my dash gauge read 38° to 42° all the way down there.....in about 85° to 90° weather.......she did great! The new Owner was really happy when he heard that the A/C was working!

That truck was the one that I said I would let you know about the 15" 4x4 Chromie wheels.....if they decided to use a different set of wheels. That truck has 6 Chromies now........one on each corner, one under the bed (with the same new tire as the others) and one in the bed for backup!

Well back to the topic at hand about fuel pump spacer insulators...

I went ahead and ordered one from O'Reilly's just to see if it was the proper width like the OEM and it is indeed 5.08 or 5.10 mm thickness which is just like the white one that comes on these trucks OEM.

Just in case anyone was wondering... it is confirmed.

I guess it depends on your location but basically it was under three bucks I think it wa $2.89.

And while I'm on the subject here is another tip.

If you're looking to save money you should download the O'Reilly's pro app and go and get yourself an account with O'Reilly's so that you can order parts at lower prices.

Not everything is a lower price but most often it is and comparable to RockAuto.

I have found some items to be cheaper on RockAuto even with the shipping then O'Reilly's and sometimes O'Reilly's is a little cheaper or at an even price to RockAuto and you don't have to wait for it don't have to pay shipping so your mileage may vary this is what it looks like.

Yes, they did. Now.......this truck was owned by a guy that had it for years, before he sold it to me........there were several things that were done to the truck that makes me think that he knew a bit about his Mazda trucks. So, I'm not sure if the truck was indeed an LX trim truck, but that is typically what those chrome door handles come on......the inside door handles were also the chrome ones, instead of the basic plastic colored handles.

It's still light out here in Arizona, so I went outside to take a look-see on my 1988 SE-5. Yes, maybe I should KNOW this as I've owned it for 31 years, but you guys want to know the facts. My '88 SE-5 has plastic outside and inside handles, but a chrome tailgate latch, all same as when I bought it in 1994.

Reporting in. I got my fuel pump on and ended up using the white spacer, with a total of 6!! paper gaskets, 3 on either side. It seems like good spacing and had no problem fitting and bolting on, and doesnt make any abnormal noises. We'll see how it goes and I'll keep a spare pump in the tool box.

Edit: you'll see the only bolt i managed to lose in the whole top end rebuild. The project literally started as just replacing the fuel pump! Haha so I had bolts all over. Truck got moved/rolled around a couple times too its a miracle I didnt lose more

It's probably wedged between the starter and the engine block! 🙂 It is amazing how many bolts or nuts I have found there over the years, after buying a truck. I seem to find them there as I start cleaning the engine up.

So did you use a JIS bolt with 12mm hex, or the more-common hardware store/auto store ones with 13mm hex?
