I didn't know this when I replaced the electrical part of my ignition switch in the late 1990s, but disconnecting/connecting the four or so wiring harnesses is much easier if one removes the instrument cluster and works through the space. Remember, there's a clip for the speedometer cable in the engine compartment that must be released to remove the cluster.
