Is it possible to unbolt the mechanical fuel pump from the cylinder head temporarily (leaving the lines connected) and cover the open hole so oil doesn't spray out, and run a few seconds to see if the noise disappears? And be sure to check that the fuel pump arm is not broken, and don't lose or break the plastic spacer.
