Any idea what this mess is.

Okay so I pulled that engine from the project truck and when I removed the flex plate for the automatic transmission the plate that attaches to the torque converter I saw a bunch of what appeared to be pieces of dried up brittle rubber stuff or something???

I'm really not sure what it is.
I'm really just wondering if any of y'all have ever dealt with this before and know what it is or where it came from.

This truck was not drivable when I got it so when I put everything back together I'm hoping I'm not missing something that has disintegrated.

MazdaMitch some of that stuff and some parts seemed to have a black rubbery type stuff coating them that may be some of it but no clue ? For sure

LOL......I'm not sure what that would be Mitch. There were a couple of different metal plates that had a rubber seal glued to them and they were to seal an "opening" at the rear of the engine. I will see if I have any pics of one, but usually the rubber on those are swollen and real flexible, not hard and cracking up.

Mrcrowley well it looks like little pieces of rubber and I've never been into an automatic transmission before so this just concerned me a little bit like I'm hoping it's not something that has disintegrated that I need.

I don't think that it is Mitch.

While working on dismantling the 2.2 engine that I pulled out of my friends B2200 with the auto trans......I noticed that the engine-to-trans brace on the passenger side of the engine is a little different than the manual trans brace......I think. I will dig out a manual trans brace and compare them.

Have you noticed this Mitch? I may be wrong, as I haven't verified it yet, but it seemed to be different.

I know that there are two different types of those engine-to-trans braces.......one style is a heavy gauge stamped steel, and the other style is cast iron. The one's on this engine are cast iron and it looked like the passenger one was a different casting than the manual trans ones I've seen.

When you pulled your automatic transmission for the project you're working on did you happen to look closely at the flex plate and see if there was any rubber dampening material that's inside?

I'm still wondering what some of this mess is and I found a piece of it inside the flex plate when I cleaned it but it's rubbery chips and I don't know what it is or where it came from.

No, there was no rubber stuff in or around my flex plate when removed. That said, this truck's engine had been removed before, so there is no telling what was there when it was initially removed.

I think that I just figured out what your mystery rubber material is Mitch!

The lower metal cover plate on the transmission (inspection cover) originally had a rubber seal along the upper edge of the metal. It was glued to the upper metal edge and sealed the gap between it and the engine oil pan. Apparently yours may have dry rotted, and broke and some of the pieces were pulled into the bell housing, and found a cubby hole to hide in!

If I'm not mistaken, my 1991 B2600i 2WD truck still had the rubber seal glued to the metal plate, but it was in rough shape and I pulled the rest of it off when I put the inspection plate back in place years ago.

Look at your inspection cover and see if there is any trace of glue from attaching the rubber seal to it when it was new originally. I looked for any pictures of my B2600i cover plate, but didn't find one of the inspection cover.
