Engine block dowels

Okay so I pulled the engine today and this engine is toast as they connecting rod on cylinder one decided to make an exit.

So there are some dowels on the back of the block that I would like to remove and they are very difficult.

I don't want to marr them up too bad I'm wondering if any of you know how to remove them properly.

I'm guessing you do not have a dowel puller(which utilizes option 2) ... Second to that a slide hammer would work, so long as you can match the threads ...
Option three ... get creative ... I would include a bolt however, when deviating from convention ..

OGMB2K the threads, are in the block and don't want to damage them. If you look close you can see where the dowel "ends" before the threads and a puller if some sort would be ideal.

I can't get a punch in from the threaded side to tap on the edge of the dowel to get it out.

These dowels are in there pretty solid.

I guess if I want them out, I need to add a dowel puller to the toolbox.

If me, I think I'd run a tap into the unthreaded end, clamp a Vise-Grips on the tap end, and hit the Vise-Grips with a hammer. Or let the machine shop handle this.

Cusser This block is not going to the machine shop, its ruined.
But I do want to figure out how to save these dowels.

I first read the subject header as "Engine dock bowels."

If the block is trash could use a cut off wheel and cut the metal around the dowel. Might just fall out once you make one slice.

Xoloanon I need to hole and threads intact so that I can put this on a engine stand.

Maybe I will go ahead and to the engine stand stuff and then later chop it off and do as you described.

Heat the tip of a smaller (not smallest!) flat-head screwdriver up and "curl" the screwdriver tip to a 90° bend with a hammer.......you can then insert your new tool into the threaded end and butt the 90° end of the screwdriver against the backside of the dowel and tap it out by going around it evenly.
You can use a mild steel (not hardened like a drift) dowel also, and heat and shape the end with a hammer the same way. You can also apply heat to the block if it is still being stubborn.

I'll have a hard time picking a screwdriver to part with.

I've thought about buying a small slide hammer and making some oddball tips for it, for these type of jobs. I need to do it!
