Mrcrowley Dead giveaways, at least for me, are when they call you "my friend", "friend", or anything that isn't a typical response (e.g. "Do the needful thing to purchase this parts" - broken English on purpose). That said, AI can fix a lot of that for them, and so the scams get more and more complex, and believable.
