So.......I gave up and quit trying to fix the fuel issue on a friends 1989 B2200 automatic transmission truck, and just removed the in-tank low psi electric fuel pump, and ordered a new manual transmission fuel pump from Rockauto to install on the cylinder head.

When I received the new pumps (I actually bought two of them), it was in a CarQuest box. Of course, it was the "large bodied" pump and not the original Mazda style, smaller bodied fuel pump. I took the pump out of the box and did some measuring, comparing it to the original style pump that I had.

I had just put this pump on the truck a couple of days ago, and of course it was leaking fuel due to a bad diaphragm inside of it.

Right away, while comparing the RA pump to the older original style pump, I could see that the pumps lever arm (that's been known to break!) was made of a thinner stamped steel than what the original style pump had.

So I measured it and took some pictures!

So.......there is quite a difference in the newer design's lever arm, and not in a good way!

BUT........while this discovery so far looks like it may provide the smoking gun in the fuel pumps like these BREAKING along the lever arm.......there is another issue with this style pump that I'll bet has even more consequences to why it tends to break!
